  • Query Regarding Consultation Letters for P-1A Renewals

I have a quick question regarding the necessity of obtaining a consultation (advisory opinion) letter for an athlete who is already an active, recognized member of their sport’s primary governing body when renewing their P-1A visa. Given that the athlete’s ongoing membership and international recognition are well-documented, is it still required or standard practice to obtain a new consultation letter for renewal petitions, or can membership itself be considered sufficient evidence?

I would appreciate your insights or experiences regarding USCIS expectations or best practices on this matter.

Yes — USCIS still expects every P-1A petition —including extensions or repeat filings —to be supported by a written “consultation” (advisory-opinion) letter from the relevant U.S. labor/peer/governing body. Ongoing membership or notoriety is excellent evidence of the athlete’s continued international recognition, but it does not replace the consultation-letter requirement.
